Shortly before the transition update was published, Dingledine allegedly [sent out an email to the Tor-internal mailing list](https://web.archive.org/web/20160628002000/https://cryptome.org/2016/06/dingledine-appelbaum-16-0602.pdf) with more detail about Appelbaum's resignation (which was [originally leaked on June 5th](https://archive.is/u6iOS) and [republished](https://archive.is/bylE6) and mirrored by [**Cryptome.org**](https://archive.is/isP0T#selection-269.0-268.1) on [June 27th](https://archive.is/4vY5N)). No one from Tor has yet confirmed whether the email is authentic.

A few days later, Appelbaum's name was [removed from the list](https://archive.is/yxqlC) of core **Tor Project** employees and volunteers, then added to the [list of past contributors](https://web.archive.org/web/20160823164626/https://www.torproject.org/about/contributors.html.en). However, he still appeared to [have control over his Tor directory authority](https://archive.is/K93V5). On July 1st, Dingledine emailed a plan to drop 'urras', a process which requires [at least five](https://archive.is/LzgfS#selection-83.785-83.895) of the [nine other directory authorities](https://archive.is/7lJ4c) to agree in consensus, including [at least one of three DAs which votes on recommended versions](https://archive.is/LzgfS#selection-83.1243-83.1354): '[moria1](https://archive.is/V0WKc)' controlled by Dingledine, '[gabelmoo](https://archive.is/EaZdS)' controlled by [developer](https://archive.is/yxqlC#selection-367.0-367.25) [Sebastian Hahn](https://archive.is/HESIE) (shown to be [targeted by the NSA's XKeyscore program](https://archive.is/gU88G#selection-1699.0-1705.154) in [2014](https://archive.is/Xx4hr)), and '[tor26](https://archive.is/OiSgs)' controlled by [sysadmin and developer](https://archive.is/yxqlC#selection-647.0-647.39) [Peter Palfrader](https://archive.is/UwKjE).
