Ships can be upgraded in the campaign, and in multiplayer, people will often continue a campaign from a different day, or increase the crew capacity. This can often happen later in the game, after man hull upgrades have been acquired, in which the difficulty curve from switching from the upgraded vessel to the larger one to support the increase in crew, would have the difficulty curve that looks like a solid wall. The difficulty increase is usually largely unexpected, and out of proportion with the rest of the experience.
I suggest having discounted hull upgrades to the new ship, to match the same level of hull upgrades to the new ship.(A discount of bulk hull upgrades to the level in which the currently used ship has.) This would be provided as an option when you purchase the ship, so players are aware of the cost difference, and will be able to accumulate the required funds to upgrade the hull so that the ship is not so unexpectedly fragile.
This would solve a somewhat frequent reason for late-game campaign restarts, should the players decide to purchase a new ship.
And, by my opinion, restarting because the difficulty ramped up so significantly that the basic enemies, the crawlers, are able to totally disassemble your ship, when previously they were nothing but a slight nuisance, is not a fun gameplay experience, and should not be considered proper gameplay.
