# The .gitattributes file is used to give attributes to pathnames
#
# For more info, check this page: https://git-scm.com/docs/gitattributes
#
# Certain operations by Git can be influenced by assigning particular
# attributes to a path.
#
# Some rules followed in this repository:
#
# - only give attributes to pathnames that do exist in the repo; that is,
# don't add attributes to a pathname just cause you foresee that it will
# be needed;
# - do not give attributes to pathnames of files that belong to your specific
# workflow like IDEs/code editors; files that are specific to your personal
# workflow or setup shouldn't even be committed, much less have attributes
# set here, consider using a global ignore file.
# ensure text files that any contributor introduces to the repository have
# their line endings normalized by setting the text attribute to "auto" for
# all files
* text=auto
# Python files used in this repository
#
# .pyl is a custom extension we use in this repository to represent a Python
# file that only holds data, no code. It only holds Python literals (built-in
# collections and primitives), hence the extension ".pyl". Their usage has
# no security risks because the contents are evaluated with ast.literal_eval(),
# which doesn't allow code to be executed.
#
# We use .pyl files just like JSON, with the benefits of being able to use
# tuples and sets and also being able to use non-string keys in dictionaries.
#
# There's also no problem in formatting Python literals when saving them back
# in a .pyl file because we can use pprint.pformat() just similarly to how
# we'd use json.dump()/dumps().
