os/2.achVendID contains zero ('\0')

this is how it looks in ttx: <achVendID value="ULA\x00"/>

As I read the spec, only letters and spaces are allows.

in the glyphs sources it's like this:

{
name = vendorID;
value = ULA;
},

But after building the fonts, the builder add that character, the ttx looks like this:

<achVendID value="ULA "/>

This in last (unmerged) version 9.0
