From a user comment about making maps interactive:

But why not use interactive graphics?
library(mapview)
mapview(, col.regions = grey.colors, alpha = 1) +
mapview(, alpha = 0.6)

This isn't the goal of the current lessons, but could be incorporated into future lessons.
