It's difficult to see features behind the choropleth.

A really cool solution to this problem is a map sandwich. Basically, overlay labels on top of the choropleth - e.g. http://maps.stamen.com/toner-labels/#12/37.7706/-122.3782

that would require a basemap without labels though, e.g. http://maps.stamen.com/toner-background/#12/37.7706/-122.3782

I've changed to the colour map views for performance reasons, and the details come through more strongly there. Does that help?
