It would be great if the package were tested for major OS.

In the GHA yml, this can be achieved with a test matrix that goes not just across python versions but also across runners, window-latest, macos-latest in addition to the ubuntu-latest.

done in 4.8.0 release

Correction - not in the 4.8.0 release, but added. Tests are failing though, opened #83 as replacement.
