This ranking makes it easy to identify institutions
and faculty actively engaged in research in a number
of areas of computer science. Unlike US News and World
Report's, which
is <a target="_blank" href="http://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/articles/science-schools-methodology">exclusively
based on surveys</a>, this ranking is entirely
objective. It measures the number of publications by
faculty that have appeared at the most selective
conferences in each area of computer science. This
approach is deliberately difficult to game: contrast
this with other approaches like citation-based
metrics, which have been repeatedly shown to
be <a target="_blank" href="http://arxiv.org/abs/1212.0638">easy</a>
to <a target="_blank" href="http://evaluation.hypotheses.org/files/2010/12/pdf_IkeAntkareISSI.pdf">manipulate</a>.
That said, incorporating citations in some form is a
long-term goal. <em>This site is in beta and is a work
in progress.</em>

across a range of institutions. They are meant to span
most established research-centric subareas of computer
science, and are not intended to be comprehensive. In
particular, only areas where at least 50 institutions
have publications since 2000 are included. The
rubrics (<em>AI</em>, <em>Systems</em>, and <em>Theory</em>)
are provided for ease of comparison with rankings
published by US News and World Report.

<p>Output is attributed to the institution where authors
are <em>currently affiliated</em> full-time,
tenure-track faculty members. An author's publications
follow them if they move. Currently, this database
includes US and selected Canadian and European CS or
EECS departments (or equivalent); other
institutions will be added in the near future.
</p>
<p><b>Adjusted counts</b>: each publication is counted
exactly once, with credit adjusted by splitting evenly
across all co-authors. This approach makes it impossible to
boost rankings simply by adding authors to a paper.
<b>Average count</b> computes the geometric mean of
the adjusted number of publications in each area by
institution. This normalizes for the size of areas, so
that large and small areas are weighed the
same. Publications must be at least 6 pages long to be
counted.
<b>Total count</b> is the sum of the adjusted number of publications.
