Inviting users who are Developers, without bothering the other 99%?

This site used to indicate when the browser is logged in on Github (next to being logged in on facebook or google) (But the method expired)

Alternatively, as an extension, we could invite specifically only who is frequently / recently active as an open source developer in javascript on different places like Github or stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/javascript
(we just still avoided spending everybody's attention through the permission dialogue until it is necessary for global player features and might only do so opionally. - And we could trigger the developer invitation it in a more simple way without history persmission: The words javascript (node.js, git, github, open source) appearing in at least a few youtube videos titles recently.

Do you suggest the extension should detect that a user visits GitHub or StackOverflow? That does not feel right… Even if it happens only on the browser side, it would feel like an invasion of privacy.

I notice however that the extension features a huge bug email button, but no link to GitHub. Maybe a contribute button would be a start?

yes! Like this: ANY bugs? and join us ? this only alternative is probably worth it: showing everybody the necessary button. (better than getting outdated from not being developed) - Just wasteful to show a link / popup millions of times. To spare ~99% of people from seeing this link / it would be much better, only inviting the right few people precisely. Thatsoffline self-targeting" could be meaningful.

(On the downside: An extension uploading data anywhere is not yet notifed with the permission dialogoue🤔
(, even tho reviewed by the stores and in the manifest.js) so that's why. until now, the only possible indicator of no risk is limiting an extensions to a single website permission. Yet browsers planned to improve, so in 2023 with manifest3, any online data / uploading might also become a permission seen & set by the users.

Well, suddenly you would need permissions for github.com, right? That becomes confusing to anyone, actually. And it would certainly not be obvious that it is just for checking whether a button should be displayed…

What’s the real cost of showing everyone a static button? The pixels are there anyway, so why does it matter which color they are?

A lot of extensions put this kind of info in their about menu. Simple and easy, and the link is not even visible 99.999% of the time. Of course it would be better if the “about” screen was not hidden behind 4 clicks (and to guess where it is, you have to assume that “about” is a setting).

At least this would be the MVP, then you can think about more advanced solutions.

We had a github-link before in the bottom of the extension popup/menu
and also it still is there right now, when you right-click the extension's icon.
however that results mainly in more feature requests and bug reports but only few more bug-fixes.

• yet for the sake of 500 000 users, we should really supercharge development speed and talk to the few % who are developers
• (Alternatively / as a last resort could talk to everybody for fundraising for once and say it both in the same "letter" / tab / notification)

real cost:

Advertisment / Visual attention in general is too cheap and not successful enough (often only being clicked 1 in a 1000 times),
That doesnt make it ethically acceptable.
it is rarely counted but i matters, if you muliply it by 500 000+. People dont open the extension every day of course but more than monthly. Imagine there would be shown an extra link and icon on your phone everytime you look at the screen 16 times a day for 70 years. Then you'd also reach 400 000+ times. Only for this extension it happens > 1000 times faster.
