Collaboration latency seems to block UI events?

We have a collaborative editor using the lexical + y-websocket setup. Everything works fine in the US, but if I run through a VPN in, say, eastern Asia, I am noticing that keystroke events gets sluggish. When lexical delegates an event, and propagates the new model through yjs-websocket, does that in any way block the main thread in it's current implementation? Trying to figure out what else it could be.
