Currently, the *.sh scripts are very clumsy, 5 lines on average and consistently cross-referencing.

This looks more like (GNU|BSD) make's job.

Honestly the entire project is rather messy at this point, we should probably work on cleaning up our git workflow, getting project guidelines set, and yeah, as you said getting a proper build system going (maybe CI with auto-deployment :3)
