How We Started

When six girls from all over the world met for the first time at SheHacks Boston, the world's largest all-female and fem non-binary hackathon in the world, they found they shared a common bond. All of the girls had a passion for both computer science and politics, a rare combination. The girls set out to solve the "fake news" dilemma - accurately informing news readers of their biases and exposing them to the "dark side." In only 36 hours, the team created Diversity My Feed, a website and twitter bot that helps twitter users to add variety to the news they read every day.

Our Mission

We believe that much of the fake news issue is caused by confirmation bias, the tendency to interpret new evidence as confirmation of one's existing beliefs or theories. Because of the rise of the digital age, many news consumers now depend on social media. However, many social media outlets use algorithyms to generate suggested posts, and often times these algorithyms create filter bubbles, or restrictions of users' perspectives that can be created due to personalized search technologies. Basically, social media algorithyms only show you what you already want to see, further confirming what you already believe.

Our team created Diversify My Feed to mitigate this confirmation bias. We believe that education is the most powerful tool available to limit political polarization, specifically education of the position of the opposing view. If people are willing to branch out, even a little bit, and follow sources that they wouldn't normally consider, they might gain respect for others and acquire a more well-rounded perspective on the world as a whole.

How It Works

Simple, clean, and user-friendly, Diversify My Feed analyzes a user's twitter followers, searching for followed media outlets. Once the bot finds what media accounts a user follows, it plugs those sources into a graph, comparing with almost fourty other American-based news outlets to find sources that are very similar, somewhat similar, and not at all similar. Then we connect users back to these new twitter options, in the hopes of diversifying their feed.
