Add unit tests for frontend #1231

Advantages / reasons for unit tests on the frontend:

a different angle to test and make the frontend more robust
less flaky
you can write way more because they go super fast
Can make debugging faster because there are more granular failures - easier to understand what's going wrong

I would propose we use jest
