Container Configuration Variables

OnEarth Docker containers accept the following environment variables. Use the --env, -e or --env-file options when starting the container with Docker. Amazon ECS also supports environment variables.

onearth-capabilities

  • S3_URL: HTTP URL to the public S3 bucket containing MRFs (e.g., http://gitc-test-imagery.s3.amazonaws.com)
  • REDIS_HOST: Redis endpoint URL. This should be a primary read/write endpoint. (e.g., gitc.0001.use1.cache.amazonaws.com)
  • REDIS_HOST_READER: Redis endpoint URL to read from. This can be a read-only Elasticache reader endpoint (e.g., gitc-ro.0001.use1.cache.amazonaws.com) to reduce the strain on the primary endpoint. Defaults to the value of REDIS_HOST.
  • DEBUG_LOGGING: true/false (defaults false) whether to use DEBUG level logging for Apache HTTPD
  • S3_CONFIGS: S3 bucket name used for configuration files (e.g., gitc-onearth-configs)
  • SERVER_STATUS: true/false (defaults false) whether to enable the mod_status Apache server status page for this service (/server-status)

onearth-reproject

  • DEBUG_LOGGING: true/false (defaults false) whether to use DEBUG level logging for Apache HTTPD
  • S3_CONFIGS: S3 bucket name used for configuration files (e.g., gitc-onearth-configs)
  • SERVER_STATUS: true/false (defaults false) whether to enable the mod_status Apache server status page for this service (/server-status)

onearth-tile-services

  • IDX_SYNC: true/false (defaults false) whether to sync IDX files on local disk at startup with those found in the S3 URL
  • DEBUG_LOGGING: true/false (defaults false) whether to use DEBUG level logging for Apache HTTPD
  • S3_CONFIGS: S3 bucket name used for configuration files (e.g., gitc-onearth-configs)
  • GENERATE_COLORMAP_HTML: true/false (defaults false) whether to generate HTML versions of the XML colormaps and place them in /etc/onearth/colormaps/v1.0/output and /etc/onearth/colormaps/v1.3/output. Useful when these colormaps aren't already stored at $S3_CONFIGS/colormaps/v1.0/output/ and $S3_CONFIGS/colormaps/v1.3/output/, respectively, as OnEarth will first attempt to sync them down from these locations.
  • SERVER_STATUS: true/false (defaults false) whether to enable the mod_status Apache server status page for this service (/server-status)

onearth-time-service

  • S3_URL: HTTP URL to the public S3 bucket containing MRFs (e.g., http://gitc-test-imagery.s3.amazonaws.com)
  • REDIS_HOST: Redis endpoint URL. This should be a primary read/write endpoint. (e.g., gitc.0001.use1.cache.amazonaws.com)
  • REDIS_HOST_READER: Redis endpoint URL that the time service will read from. This can be a read-only Elasticache reader endpoint (e.g., gitc-ro.0001.use1.cache.amazonaws.com) to reduce the strain on the primary endpoint. Defaults to the value of REDIS_HOST.
  • DEBUG_LOGGING: true/false (defaults false) whether to use DEBUG level logging for Apache HTTPD

onearth-wms

  • S3_CONFIGS: S3 bucket name used for configuration files (e.g., gitc-onearth-configs)
  • SHAPEFILE_BUCKET: Public S3 bucket containing shapefiles. When not specified, OnEarth will be configured to attempt to read shapfiles from /onearth/shapefiles/ for each WMS request.
  • SHAPEFILE_SYNC: true/false (defaults false) whether to sync shapefiles on local disk at /onearth/shapefiles/ at startup with those found in the SHAPEFILE_BUCKET S3 URL
  • USE_LOCAL_SHAPEFILES: true/false (defaults false) whether to configure OnEarth to load shapefiles from SHAPEFILE_BUCKET (when false) or from /onearth/shapefiles/ (when true) for WMS requests. Use of local files is generally much faster than reading from S3. Ignored when SHAPEFILE_BUCKET isn't specified.
  • SERVER_STATUS: true/false (defaults false) whether to enable the mod_status Apache server status page for this service (/server-status)

Loading Configurations from S3

Configuration files for the onearth-capabilities, onearth-reproject, onearth-tile-services, and onearth-wms containers can be pulled down from an S3 bucket instead of from a file system mount. The containers are automatically configured to copy files from the bucket specified in the S3_CONFIGS environment variable if it is used.

The S3 bucket must be configured in the following manner (replace {s3-configs} with your S3 bucket name):

{s3-configs}/colormaps/ (optional)
  {s3-configs}/colormaps/v1.3/
{s3-configs}/config/
  {s3-configs}/config/conf/
  {s3-configs}/config/endpoint/
  {s3-configs}/config/layers/
  {s3-configs}/config/mapserver/
{s3-configs}/empty-tiles/
{s3-configs}/legends/ (optional)

Files found in these locations will be copied from {s3-configs} to /etc/onearth/ within the appropriate containers.

Optional for WMTS/TWMS

ZENJPEG

Currently mod_convert need two layers to be setup. One will serve the source ZENJPEGS similar to a normal jpeg, while the second will convert the ZENJPEG. The second will have the following an extra config pointing to the first layer. The name of the source ZENJPEG layer must be the same as that of the converted layer but end with _ZENJPEG.

convert_mrf:
convert_source: format to convert from. For ZenJPEG, this will be .jpeg

convert_mrf must also be listed in the layer's "best" configuration file.

hidden: true

A layer config with "hidden: true" will result in its layer being excluded from the WMTS and TWMS GetCapabilities documents. Consequently, the layer will also be excluded from WMS GetCapabilities and will not be available for use in WMS at all. WMTS requests for the layer will still work, however. For ZenJPEG, the source layer config should have this option enabled so that the source layer is not advertised, as users should only be using the converted layer.

copy_dates: layer_id

The layer_id of a layer that this layer's time information should be copied to. This is configured by default for ZenJPEG layers, and thus does not need to be explicitly configured in their layer configurations.

Best Layers

A best layer is made up of one virtual layer (best layer). The one best layer is mapped to many actual layers. The source layers for each of a best layer's dates are determined by checking availability of source layers for the given date in order of priority. See src/modules/time_service/utils/ for more information.

On the config for the best layer there will be a:

  • best_config: lists the various layers and their priority (higher score, higher priority). The presence of this config will generate a best_configs key in redis.

On the config of each of actual layers that make up the best layer, there will be a:

  • best_layer: points to the virtual best layer. The presence of this config will generate a best_layer key in redis. The presence of a best_layer key tells ingest and and oe-redis-update that this layer is a used by a best layer, and to call best.lua to update the virtual layer. Sample configs are show below.

BRUNSLI

Brunsli, a JPEG repacking library, is being used to decrease file size (~22%) of JPEG layers. The mod_brunsli APACHE filter is used to convert detected brunsli-compressed JPEG layers back to .jpg format. Brunsli can be toggled on and off via the 'use_brunsli' flag in mrfgen.py. A sample configuration layer configuration is included at the end of the file.

Optional for Time Service

time_config: Custom time period configuration for layer
best_config: Custom best available configuration for layer as a key value list of Z-score (higher number means higher priority) : Filename Prefix
best_layer: For a "non-best" layer (e.g., STD, NRT), this is the associated "best available" layer

See doc/time_detection.md for time period configuration information.

See src/modules/mod_wmts_wrapper/configure_tool/ for more details.
