SELF_SIGNED_CERT_IN_CHAIN installing xpm

I'm running in the "old" SELF_SIGNED_CERT_IN_CHAIN error and can't figure out how to solve it. I tried the different solutions from 2014 (e.g. https://blog.npmjs.org/post/78165272245/more-help-with-self-signed-cert-in-chain-and-npm). I tried different ways to install npm, different versions, etc. but I'm always running into the self signed certificate error. Any suggestion or experience with this issue? Thanks!

I confess that my experience with certificates is poor, thus I would do exactly what npm suggests: 'if this does not work on your node version, please report a bug!'.

Google gives many links related to this issue. Are you behind a corporate proxy?

yes I am. Other installations were successful but still this could be a problem. From my understanding (which is poor in the field of IT networks) it might be possible to add the missing certificate manually. But I'm not sure how to do this.
Could this solve my problem anyways or do I have to talk to SysAdmin to stop blocking this address?
