Uninstallation leaves a LOT of files behind #2812

Check for other issues

  • I've checked for other issues, and none exist.

Issue description

When I uninstall on Windows it left 2.38 GB over 37K files.

On my 2nd Windows 11 computer it left 292 MB of files over 3,591 files.

Most of it appears to be Thumbnails

  • C:\Users\jim\AppData\Local\com.spacedrive.desktop
  • C:\Users\jim\AppData\Roaming\spacedrive
  • C:\Program Files\Spacedrive (just the folder)

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install Spacedrive
  2. Test Spacedrive
  3. Uninstall Spacedrive
  4. Find files left behind
  5. Delete files manually

Platform and versions

  • OS: Windows 11
  • Spacedrive: 0.4.2

On one of my computers I found an sd-desktop.exe still in memory, which was locking some of the files. On the other computer there was no such process and I was able to delete the orphaned files without issue. It's parent process is missing, and the program file is deleted.

Maybe it was a background process? It sure has been busy!

and it has a LOT of threads

I had to use elevated privileges to kill the process. Maybe it was launched by the installer while it has elevated privileges? That is a security no-no...
