Hi, I'm Chad 👋
I build tools that help nonprofits leverage the power of the open source community.
The impact of your contribution
A contribution means you believe in open data. It means you support new models for ensuring nonprofit grants data remains free and open for everyone, regardless of a nonprofit organization's ability to afford expensive subscription-based databases.
Nonprofits + open source = 🚀
What I do
I'm the creator of Grantmakers.io, which in its five year existence has become one of the largest free sources of searchable philanthropic data on the Internet. It's fully open source, non-commercial, and hosted right here on Github via Github Pages...for free (thank you Github!).
Some of my other projects in the charitable sector include:
-
Nonprofit starter website template
Complete with online donations and newsletter signup -
Foundation website template
Adopted by a regional association of grantmakers to help members establish their first online presence. -
IRS 990 Fetch
The Node scripts that power Grantmakers.io -
IRS 990 Viewer
Chrome extension to directly view, format, and search the IRS 990 XML files -
hGrant JSON
The hGrant spec converted to JSON schema -
SDG Predictor
Classifies a string of text according to the most relevant U.N. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)
Donation options
Don't have a Github account or prefer to support at a different level? Additional options can be found at the donate page on Grantmakers.io.
Get in touch
I love hearing from users of my projects. Feel free to contact me at opensource@grantmakers.io with questions, ideas, insights, or just to say hello. If you're in Chicago, let's grab a coffee. ☕
A sincere thank you 💖
Chad

$1 a month
SelectYou are an amazing human being 🙏
$2 a month
SelectYou're covering all direct costs associated with Grantmakers.io profile updates. Some months, you're doing so four times over (true fact)!
$5 a month
SelectThis buys me a coffee while I work on Grantmakers.io updates. Approximately once a month the IRS updates the 990 dataset which powers Grantmakers.io. I usually head to a local coffee shop to run the scripts that push the updates live. ☕
$6 a month
SelectCovers ALL direct Grantmakers.io expenses for the year! Because I do all development and design myself, my out of pocket expenses for Grantmakers.io are limited to Google Compute Engine for the updates and automated backups, a hosted privacy policy service, and the annual domain cost.
$15 a month
SelectThis tier allows me to automate the sharing of more 990-related datasets publicly. While anyone can email me for data dumps of my entire MongoDB database of 990PF filings, I've always wanted to post these datasets publicly to lower the barriers to more people using or experimenting with the data.
$30 a month
SelectYou're allowing me to experiment with new features and projects which move philanthropy forward. Often these experiments require third party services and APIs which come at a cost.
$100 a month
