Installing deb package over previous version

Does this cause two deb packages to be installed or does it first uninstall the previous version and then install the new version?

I'm on Linux Mint 21.2.

I'm not actually sure what the package manager does under the hood, but this is how I install novelWriter on my system, and I haven't had a problem yet.
