Design Philosophy

Go Fish has a few important views about the fishing mechanic that shape how it is balanced.

  1. Fishing should be a manual experience. If any fishing is automated, it should provide minimal output for a high investment.

Most players are familiar with AFK fishing, which revolutionized the loot-obtaining metagame in older versions of Minecraft. Players would stand inside a contraption, hold right-click, go AFK, and come back 10 hours later with a dozen double-chests full of fish and rare loot. Go Fish takes the stance that this mechanic, and anything similar to it, should be eradicated. The balancing of crates and loot from fishing in this mod is designed with the assumption that players are not using these systems, and are instead manually fishing up each catch.

  2. Fishing should provide the opportunity to gain loot, but the output should be slower than alternatives.

Fishing should provide players with the opportunity to get rare loot and resources, but it should not be more efficient at doing this than other methods (such as mining, raiding dungeons, exploring, or fighting monsters). Crates and loot will be nerfed if players find they are too strong.

  3. Fishing should be fun.

Go Fish aims to make the rewards of fishing more exciting, while at the same time not forcing players to grind endlessly to get what they need. Players will discover artifacts and trinkets that boost their fishing speed and luck as time goes on, which rewards early investments and provides a sense of progression.
