Basis Microletronics on Latin America
Before reading, understand that the Article / Work Plan / Financing is a long-term work proposal that can involve a lot of people, companies and universities. This aims to create a structure more favorable to what has been tried in other times, but without effective success. All of this began in 2013 when I was taking a course offered by the federal government that ministered the development stages for digital circuits. I was able to be a verification engineer with emphasis on Intellectual Property verification "IPs". At this time, I founded the GLADIC "Latin American Group of Integrated Circuits Development" that motivated me to look for new ways to verify RTL "Register Transfer Level"; In which I was successful and the feats are published on sites like Opencores and GitHub.
Over the past year I have begun to look for a way to integrate what I do with the global context of microelectronics. While China and the United States have waged a legal war in buying manufacturing and project companies there, Design Houses are closing The doors because of the high and continued financial dependence they had on the resources / advantages offered by the government that are being extinguished.
In addition, there is a constant search for a new format, due to the economic distancing that many companies in the industry suffer from adopting a format that requires large sums of money. This also serves in the area of projects, in which the lack of knowledge about the Brazilian needs and cause investment with low probability of return. Latin America is today in a serious dilemma about the directions that must be taken. I would not want to leave the area but so little to get only scholarship and this agony that many of my colleagues spend today. Then I'll come up with a proposal and hope that people with the same ideals can help me by investing in it.
This project aims at the production of Open Source Hardware and focuses on the following objectives:
- Developing IPs
- Encourage the use of free software
- Give more visibility to Latin America within the area of microelectronics
- Improve relations between university and companies
- Professional achievement
- Contribution in the development of Software / Hardware
- Improve socioeconomically Latin America
What we have already done so far Under GITHUB website is located GLADICOS group which contains a range of small control block, communication and arithmetic projects. The group contains about 6 to 9 members. These make up the core of development. The icarus verilog free tool is used to perform verifications using interfaces with C / C ++, GTK, SystemC and verilog. The errors identified and reported are found here. For the current staff size a list of 10-12 IPs that are posted on the site has been devised.
This project is divided into 3 phases:
- Creating a base of IPs
- Tests in Field Programmable Gate Array "FPGAs" with example software creation
- Elaboration of proposals of System On to Chip "SoC"
- There are by-products that will be generated, which are:
- Updates of existing github software’s
- Proposed new software for IP elaboration and validation
The following objects are expected to be delivered:
- IP source code, along with documentation, verification environments, and synthesis files
- Software developed to demonstrate the testing of individual IPs
- Software used, improved or created according to need
The resources to be used during the project consist of development space, IT structure, space maintenance and the development core.
The developmental nucleus consists of the following composition:
- Coordinator: Responsible for the progress of the project
- IP Designer: Responsible for IP documentation / development, bug fixes, physical synthesis in FPGAs and joining blocks for more complex systems
- IP Checker: Responsible for ensuring what is in the documentation is implemented, developing environments in programming languages capable of stimulating RTL, detailing tests that cover possible problems in RTL
- Analog / RF Specialist: Responsible for providing options for choices of products already manufactured, in addition to elaborating Printed Circuit Board "PCBs", signal analysis, proposal solutions for problems in the area
- Buyer: Responsible for purchasing equipment, budgeting and control of delivery times
- Development Analyst I: Responsible for the part of creating and formulating software fixes
- Development Analyst II: Responsible for developing practical examples using Hardware / Software
- Outsourced: Responsible for site maintenance and integrity
To perform this task you will need to:
- Acquisition of licenses for FPGAs "Altera®, Xilinx® and Microsemi®"
- Travel if necessary to present solutions to Investors / Customers
- The expected investment value for this project is 30 - 100 million for execution over 60 months
- Acquisition of oscilloscopes, multimeter and other electronic accessories
- Rental of space suitable for development
- Acquisition of computers, laptops and network structure
Obs*: So far, 3 DE0-NANO / 3 DE10 NANO FPGAs have been acquired to perform tests costing R$ 3500. These will be used to test a developing version of SpaceWire and other IPs that will be made during this year.
Obs*: More additions can be made here in propurse since people start ask or help to a better understand.
