Couchbase Documentation Site

This is the Antora playbook project (aka site build) for the Couchbase documentation site published at docs.couchbase.com.

Playbook

The playbook, defined in a playbook file, configures the build for the site. The playbook specifies the content sources (repository and branches), site URL, UI bundle URL, global AsciiDoc attributes, and Asciidoctor extensions.

There are two playbook files in this repository, one for each environment.

production-antora-playbook.yml

Configures the build for the production site.

staging-antora-playbook.yml

Configures the build for the staging site.

The staging site is built for each pull request. The production site is built for each change to the master branch.

Home Docs Component

The home/ directory in this repository contains the source for the Home documentation component. All other content is sourced from separate repositories and branches.

Custom Asciidoctor Extensions

The custom extensions in the lib/ directory process the manpage macro (Couchbase CLI and Backup components), Swagger UI macro, and multi-row table headers.

File Watcher and LiveReload

This repository contains a script that watches .adoc and antora.yml files in the author workspace (as defined by local-antora-playbook.yml) and triggers a new Antora build when it detects changes to those files. The script also starts a web server and can use LiveReload to reload the browser tab after the Antora build completes. To use the script, run the following.

  1. Install dependencies.

    $ npm i -g gulp-cli
    $ npm i
  2. If you’re using Chrome, install the LiveReload chrome extension. Firefox has built-in support for LiveReload.

  3. Start the build.

    $ LIVERELOAD=true gulp

    The build first generates the site using Antora, analgous to the antora local-antora-playbook.yml command. It then serves the files in the output directory using a local web server.

    The web server’s host URL is printed to the console after the watch task completes.

    [17:43:27] Starting server...
    [17:43:27] Documentation Site Preview started http://localhost:5000
    [17:43:27] LiveReload started on port 35729
    [17:43:27] Running server
    Tip
    To skip the initial build, use gulp serve as the Gulp command.
  4. The console output will print status information every time a change is detected.

    [17:33:59] Starting 'generate'...
    [17:34:02] Finished 'generate' after 3.35 s
  5. Make changes to your AsciiDoc files locally. The browser tab should automatically reload after a short while.

  6. Use Ctrl+C to stop the process.

Xref Validation

This project uses the @antora/xref-validator package to validate xrefs. The validation is currently handled using a separate invocation of Antora.

For the production build, the validator is installed into the Docker container (see Dockerfile.jenkins). For the staging build, the validator is installed as a project dependency (see netlify/package.json). For local builds, the validator is also installed as a project depnedency (see package.json).

The validator runs on every build (both production and staging) to check for broken xrefs (i.e., broken links between pages). Currently, the validator is non-enforcing in both environemnts.

Reading the Report

If there are xref violations (i.e., broken xrefs), a report of those violations will be printed to the CI build log. Here’s an excerpt from that report:

repo: https://github.com/couchbase/couchbase-operator.git | branch: 1.2.x | component: operator | version: 1.2
  path: docs/user/modules/ROOT/pages/cluster-status-guide.adoc | xref: admin-console-access.adoc
  path: docs/user/modules/ROOT/pages/helm-cluster-config.adoc | xref: install-openshift.html.adoc
  path: docs/user/modules/ROOT/pages/persistent-volumes-guide.adoc | xref: persistent-volume-setup.adoc
repo: https://github.com/couchbase/docs-server.git | branch: release/6.0 | component: server | version: 6.0
  path: modules/install/pages/upgrade-strategy-for-features.adoc | xref: manage:manage-xdcr:create-xdcr-reference.adoc
  path: modules/install/pages/upgrade-strategy-for-features.adoc | xref: manage:monitor:ui-monitoring-statistics.adoc

Each broken xref is grouped by origin (the repository and branch where the file can be found), then path (the file in the repository that contains the broken xref). So, for example, you will see an origin like this:

repo: https://github.com/couchbase/couchbase-operator.git | branch: 1.2.x | component: operator | version: 1.2

In this case, the broken xref was found in the 1.2 version of operator, and the page is coming from the 1.2.x branch of the https://github.com/couchbase/couchbase-operator.git repository.

Under an origin, you’ll see an entry like this:

path: docs/user/modules/ROOT/pages/cluster-status-guide.adoc | xref: admin-console-access.adoc

Looking in the origin from above, find the path docs/user/modules/ROOT/pages/cluster-status-guide.adoc and look for an xref to admin-console-access.adoc. That’s the xref that needs to be fixed (if it’s still broken).

Generating the Report

To run the report on your local machine, first switch to the playbook repository (i.e., docs-site). Next, install the dependencies (which you may have already done):

$ npm i

Then, run the xref validator as follows:

$ ./node_modules/.bin/antora --fetch --generator=@antora/xref-validator production-antora-playbook.yml > xref-validator.log 2>&1

Finally, view the report. You can find the report in the xref-validator.log file.
