DSA Website Plumbing

This is the system-administration bit of the DSA website. The WordPress site with the content comes from another repo.

Getting Started

This project uses Vagrant to define a virtual machine that runs the website locally. For some bizarre reason I couldn't find an Ubuntu 16.04 box with Puppet 4 installed that actually worked, so this does require some manual steps:

1. Run vagrant up dev --no-provision to bring the VM up.
2. Run vagrant ssh dev to log on to the VM.
3. Run cd /vagrant in the VM to switch to the VM's directory that mirrors this repo.
4. Run ./vagrant-init.sh to add Puppet's package repository and install the puppet agent (this will take a few minutes, especially depending on your network speed).
5. Hit Ctrl-d (or run logout) to log out of the VM.
6. Run vagrant provision dev to run puppet and set everything up (this part will take about five minutes).

Once you've done all that, you'll be able to access your local copy of the DSA site by going to 192.168.42.13 in your web browser (you'll probably want to add that address to your hosts file with a more reasonable name).

The first time you go to the site, you'll need to do the initial Wordpress set up, and after that change the theme to 'Portland DSA'. After that's done, you won't need to do it again until after you destroy your Vagrant VM by running vagrant destroy dev. You can pause the VM with vagrant suspend dev and bring it up again with vagrant resume dev, and it will have the same state as before. If your computer shuts off unexpectedly, you can use the resume command to restore it.

Updating the DSA Wordpress Theme

To update the DSA Wordpress theme in the Puppet Wordpress module:

1. Run git submodule update --remote to pull the latest commit for the WP theme from GitHub.
2. Run ./build-site.sh to compile the theme's assets and copy them to the Puppet module.
3. Run vagrant provision dev to apply the changes.

If you want to use a different commit than the latest one on the master branch for the Wordpress theme, then instead of step 1 above run cd dsa-wordpress to move over to the submodule, check out whatever commit you want, and cd ../ to move back to this repo's root. After that, run the next two steps as normal.
