Configuring FT 991A for Phone DX

Over the course of my (few) phone contests, I have found some settings that ensures more oomph on TX and more comfortable RX. I'll break down both TX and RX settings for FM and SSB.
Actually, not much to do, two settings only.
- Give the mic a bit of more generous mic gain
- In the Menu set the NAR/WIDE setting to
N 9K
. In transmit mode, this setting will cause the transmitted signal to be a lot more 'packed' and while it might become less loud for nearby station, it assures that DX stations can pick up your signal with more comfort. During receiving, it will narrow down the receiving bandwidth and help your station to defend from an nearby interfering adjacent signal.
Here, we have a bit more headroom to fiddle with.
- In the Menu set the NAR/WIDE setting to
W
- Set the WIDTH clause to
1950
- Set the SHIFT clause to
-220Hz
- Set AGC mode to
FAST
- Set the noise blanker NB to
ON
- Do not change your mic gain settings or add more mic gain - that will cause our TX audio to be distorted
- In Menu item
110 - SSB TX BPF
set it to400-2600
setting. This will cause the audio to be more 'narrow', ensuring that the power that you are transmitting is concentrated in an more narrow signal and ensuring better intelligibility and further copy. - I also found in my case that the PROC state to
OFF
to transmit clearer audio.
Hope that helps; 73-
