== Problem Overview | ||
Galleon core library that is used during provisioning is backward compatible. Galleon core version N is able to provision WildFly server that has been built using
Galleon core version N-x.
Galleon core library is not upward compatible for good reason. It implements the provisioning logic for a given Galleon version.
Galleon core version N is not able (actually could but with no guarantee) to provision a WildFly server that depends on a Galleon core version N+x.
The problem we are facing is that our provisioning tooling is bound to a given Galleon core version.
That makes upward compatibility impossible. Due to this limitation, each time we release new WildFly feature-packs that depend on a given Galleon core version, we need to upgrade all our tooling. Furthermore the error in this case is cryptic and doesn't help user to understand
what corrective action is required.
This dependency of WildFly feature-pack on a Galleon core version is not formalized. It is only discovered at provisioning time, with cryptic errors.
At feature-pack build time, even if the built feature-pack depends on a given Galleon core version, no check is operated.
Whatever the Galleon core in use, the galleon feature-pack is built without any compatibility check.
We are here proposing to make WildFly provisioning tooling upward compatible and formalize the dependency that a feature-pack can have on a given Galleon version.
== Proposal Overview | ||
=== New Galleon API | ||
In this proposal we are introducing a Galleon provisioning API that allows to deal with multiple versions of Galleon core library.
The API isolates the tooling from the Galleon core version. It handles the Galleon feature-packs resolution and main provisioning use-cases.
The API allows to provision feature-packs that depend on older Galleon core versions as well as newer Galleon core versions.
=== Binding a feature-pack with a Galleon version at build time
We have the opportunity to check that the Galleon core version used at build time will be able to provision the server at provisioning time.
When building a feature-pack, the Galleon core version in use to build the feature-pack is set in the Galleon feature-pack `feature-pack.xml` descriptor.
=== Impact on tooling | ||
This API is to be used by Provisioning tooling. For example:
* Galleon CLI and Maven plugin
* WildFly Maven plugin | ||
* WildFly bootable JAR Maven plugin
* Prospero CLI, and all kind of distributions (management integration, installer,...)
* WildFly Glow | ||
The impact is at the tooling implementation level, no visible changes at the tooling user level is expected. For example,
the provisioning based on Galleon Maven plugin that occurs in WildFly repository is untouched.

== Requirements | ||

=== Implementation notes
==== Tooling API | ||
The API is composed of 3 parts. Being 3 parts is an implementation detail, tooling depend directly on the Galleon API only.
* Galleon maven universe: The resolution of Galleon feature-packs using Maven.
* Galleon common API: this API is shared between Galleon core and the Galleon API.
* Galleon API: Provisioning + feature-pack resolutions. It depends on the Galleon common API and Galleon maven universe.
The maven coordinates of the Galleon API: `org.jboss.galleon:galleon-api`, coordinates of the common api: `org.jboss.galleon:galleon-common-api`,
coordinates of the maven universe api: `org.jboss.galleon:galleon-maven-universe`.
==== No Galleon core classes in the tooling classpath
The Galleon core classes must not be present in the tooling classpath. Dynamic classloader is to be used to resolve Galleon core classes.
==== Resolution of the Galleon core library
At provisioning time, the new API resolves the feature-pack(s) to use and retrieve the Galleon core version advertised by the feature-pack(s).
When multiple galleon feature-packs are used, the greater version is used. If a discovered version is smaller than the API version, the API version is used.
If no version is discovered (feature-pack built with an older version of Galleon), the Galleon core with the same version as the API is used.
Galleon being backward compatible, older feature-packs can be provisioned with this new API.
When WildFly Channels are configured in the provisioning tooling, an attempt is first made to identify if a Galleon core version is configured in the channel.
If a version is found, this version is used and no discovery of the Galleon core version is attempted. If no version is found, the version discovery is operated.
This discovery is transparent when using the Galleon tooling API.
==== Packaged Galleon core artifact
The API jar artifact includes the Galleon core library jar artifact of the same version. N.B.: The API includes the Galleon core jar,
the Galleon core classes are hidden and not loadable from the classpath.
Packaging the core jar allows to avoid to resolve the core library when the version is equal or smaller to the current API version.
For other cases, the jar artifact is resolved using the configured maven repositories (according to the tooling in use).
==== Impact on WildFly Galleon plugins
This plugin is WildFly specific. It is called during provisioning in order to assemble a WildFly installation. This plugin is bound
to a given Galleon core version. The new API enforces that the Galleon core version expected by the galleon-plugins is used during provisioning.
The introduction of the tooling API has no impact on the WildFly Galleon Plugins.
==== Impact on WildFly Galleon plugins Maven plugin
This plugin is used to build a WildFly Feature-pack. Currently no check is done to validate that the feature-pack content is aligned with the Galleon core version
in use at build time. The Maven plugin logic is evolved to check that the feature-pack content is in sync with the Galleon core version in use. In addition,
during feature-pack build, the Galleon core version in use is set in the feature-pack XML descriptor.
==== Impact on provisioning tools
The impact is major on all tools that depend today on Galleon core API.
The impact is at the implementation level only. No visible changes for tooling users.
N.B: Nothing forbid a tool to continue to use the Galleon core API directly but that is strongly discouraged.
==== The Galleon CLI case
The Galleon CLI is currently strongly bound to the Galleon core library. Using the newly introduced API is not enough to cover all the CLI use-cases.
A slightly different approach is put in place.
We are binding part of the CLI to the Galleon core library. This core specific part is resolved when a newer core version is required.
The CLI is split into 3 parts (3 maven artifacts):
* The "CLI commands": this part depends on the Galleon tooling API. It implements the commands up to the point where a version of Galleon core is needed.
* The "CLI core adapter": this part is bound to a given Galleon core. It is dynamically resolved when a core version has been identified. It implements the logic of the command
that interacts with the Galleon core library. This core adapter depends on the "CLI commands" artifact.
* The "CLI shaded jar": this part is what replaces the current CLI. It shades the Galleon API and Galleon CLI commands.
The "CLI commands" jar artifact contains the "CLI core adapter" jar artifact of its version. This avoid to resolve the "CLI core adapter" when the current version is usable for
provisioning. | ||
There is no visible changes when using the galleon CLI tool.
==== POC | ||
In order to validate this proposal, an implementation of the API has been made.
Galleon CLI, Galleon Maven plugin, WildFly Maven plugin, WildFly Bootable JAR Maven plugin, WildFly Glow and Prospero have been successfully ported to the new API.
