- NYC Open Data is billed as a single repository for all data produced by New York City agencies, but it is very hard to discover useful data there and often hard to find data that you already know is in the repository. You're better off looking through individual agencies to start with.
- Independent Budget Office publishes extensive reports on city spending and budget issues. They're an incredible resource (one Urban students should already be familiar with).
- Gotham Gazette maintains a running round up of reports on the city. It isn't very well organized, but there's a lot there.
- BetaNYC keeps a roundup of open data resources
- Open NY is a data repository for many executive branch agencies and authorities.
- NYS GIS Clearinghouse contains a lot of statewide and local geographic data. Registration may be required for certain data.
- OpenBudget allows access to current and prior year state budget data in machine-readable formats. There are also archived financial plans documents dating back to 1954.
- Open Senate allows access to a ton of state legislative data.
- Open Book New York allows access local government spending, state contracts, state spending, state payments, and public authority information.
- New York State Archives Not necessarily machine-readable, but a great resource for historic information.
- NY State Legislature Not necessarily machine-readable, but has a compilation of all state laws.
- CT Transit publishes realtime data from the Connecticut Transit authority.
- Jersey City, NJ Offical Portal and Open Jersey City
- New Jersey State GIS
